Noticing changes in your pet’s behavior or routine? If something feels off, it’s always best to trust your instincts. At Black Mountain Animal Hospital in Rancho Peñasquitos, we recommend scheduling a sick visit if your pet shows any of the following signs:
Your veterinarian will start by reviewing your pet’s medical history and discussing the symptoms you’ve noticed. Understanding the background helps us get to the root of the problem quickly.
We’ll perform a head-to-tail exam based on your pet’s condition. This includes checking vital signs and evaluating all major body systems to pinpoint signs of illness or discomfort.
If your pet’s condition requires further evaluation, we may recommend lab tests, imaging, or other diagnostics (additional fees apply). If advanced care is necessary, we can coordinate referrals to trusted local specialists.
Before you leave, we’ll walk you through your pet’s treatment options, home care instructions, and any recommended follow-up. Medications may be prescribed based on your pet’s needs (separate fee).
If appropriate, we’ll recommend medications, dietary changes, or other treatments to support your pet’s recovery (medications billed separately).
We perform a visual exam of your pet’s teeth and gums to look for signs of dental disease and recommend cleanings when needed.
Our veterinarians provide personalized diet and weight recommendations to support long-term health and energy.
We’ll discuss any behavioral issues and offer expert advice based on your pet’s breed, age, and lifestyle.
(Not included in the base exam fee — but commonly added during wellness visits.)

Dr. Render is the founder of Render HeartCare, a mobile cardiology service based in San Diego. He earned his veterinary degree from Cornell University and completed advanced training in internal medicine and cardiology through internships and a residency at MedVet Columbus. His clinical interests include congenital heart defects and cardiac tumor evaluations.
When he’s not caring for pets, Dr. Render enjoys sports, cooking shows, and comedies.
Meet Dr. Cocker, a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist based in San Diego. After earning her veterinary degree from Oklahoma State University, she completed advanced training in internal medicine and critical care across Texas before returning to California for her residency. She has a special interest in gastrointestinal and liver disease and contributed to Ettinger’s textbook on internal medicine. Outside of work, Dr. Cocker enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and child.
